Department of Pharmacology

GOAL

The broad goal of the teaching of undergraduate students in Pharmacology is to inculcate a rational and scientific basis of therapeutics.

OBJECTIVES

KNOWLEDGE

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

1. Describe the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of essential and commonly used drugs.
2. List the indications, contraindications, interactions and adverse reactions of commonly used drugs.
3. Indicate the use of appropriate drug in a particular disease with consideration to its cost, efficacy and safety for
(A). Individual needs.
(B). Mass therapy under national health program.
4. Describe the pharmacokinetic basis, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of common poisonings.
5. List the drugs of addiction and recommend the management.
6. Classify environmental and occupational pollutants and state the management issues.
7. Indicate causations in prescription of drugs in special medical situations such as pregnancy, lactation, infancy and old age.
8. Integrate the concept of rational drug therapy in clinical pharmacology.
9. State the principles underlying the concept of 'Essential Drugs'
10. Evaluate the ethics and modalities involved in the development and introduction of new drugs.

SKILLS

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

INTEGRATION

Practical knowledge of use of drugs in clinical practice will be acquired through integrated teaching with clinical departments and pre clinical departments.

INFRASTRUCTURE

1. Lecture theatre: Common Lecture Theatre shared with other Department.
2. Demonstration room: There are be two demonstration rooms (60 sq. m. area) fitted with strip chairs, Over head projector, Slide projector, white board to accommodate at least 80 students at a time.
3. Practical Laboratories: There shall be a Practical Laboratory with accommodation for 75-100 students for the following namely:
I. Experimental Pharmacology: (200 Sq.m. area) with ante-room (14 Sq. m. area for smoking and varnishing of kymograph papers.
II. Clinical pharmacology and pharmacy: (200 Sq.m. area) with one ante-room (14 Sq.m. area) for technicians, storage of equipment and appliances and preparation room.
4. Museum: a museum (125sq.mt.) for specimens, charts, models, with a separate section depicting “History of Medicine”, with a seating capacity of at least 40 students. All the specimens shall be labeled and at least 15 copies of catalogues for student use be provided.
5. Department Library: a Departmental library-cum-seminar room (30sq.m.area) with at least 80-100 books. However, not more than two copies of any one book shall be counted towards computation of the total number of books.
6. Research::one research laboratory (50 Sq.m. area) for research purposes.
7. Accommodation shall be provided for the staff as under, namely:

Professor and Head of the Department- (18 Sq.m.area);
Associate Prof./Reader-Two rooms (15 sq.m. area);
Asst. Professor/Lecturers- Two rooms (12 sq.m. area)
Tutors/ Demonstrators- Two rooms (15 Sq.m. area);
Department office cum Clerical room one (12 Sq.m. area); and
Working accommodation for non-teaching staff (12 Sq.m. area
